September 17, 2023 - Before installing a wall-mounted air conditioning unit in its private portion, it is necessary to observe the usual safety instructions. Improper installation involves significant hazards, both for the occupants and for the environment. This can lead to possible contamination problems, fire or permanent deterioration of the wall unit used.
The Building Act prohibits the sale or rental of a wall-mounted air conditioner that is not certified. All devices must be approved by a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. To make sure you are purchasing a compliant device, look for the logos of the major accredited organizations: CSA Group (CSA), Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada (ULC), Intertek Testing Services Ltd., Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, MET Laboratories Inc.
Some devices require installation by a construction contractor. The latter must hold a valid licence in the subclass appropriate to the work to be performed:
And if the installation requires electrical work, it must be carried out by an electrical contractor holding a valid licence in subclass 16.0 – Electrical contractor.
Before hiring a contractor, make sure they hold a valid licence of the correct subclass. To do so, use the Register of licence holders or contact the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.
