A legal concept that obliges a natural or legal person, without imposing a disproportionate or undue burden, to put an end to a situation of discrimination. This concept affects several areas set out in section 10 of the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms and section 15 (1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including race, color, sex, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, sexual orientation, marital status, age, law, religion, political beliefs, language, ethnic or national origin, social condition and disability (mental or physical impairments).
