Definition : Stormwater infiltration

The part of rainwater that seeps through the failures of a building's waterproofing element (exterior and interior). This leak can be caused by the following situations:

  • Failure of the waterproofing membrane (roof, weather barrier, vapour barrier);
  • Failure of the impermeable coating of the foundations;
  • Wear of gaskets;
  • Failure of water drainage mechanisms (drains, gutters, downspouts and French drains).

Water infiltration has the effect of soaking the walls. They are the most serious causes of damp phenomena and can cause mould and significant material damage to the structure and thermal insulation of the building.
