Definition : Garage structural concrete slabs

A horizontal load-bearing concrete structure, usually reinforced with reinforcing steel unless it sits directly on the ground (see Concrete slab on the ground). This structure, which usually rests on continuous supports (e.g. walls) or insulated supports (e.g. columns or columns), is used as a running or parking surface for vehicles. The reinforcing steel it contains is used to take up the loads applied to it and to retransmit them to the continuous or insulated support elements.

Garage structural concrete slabs that do not rest on the ground are subject to the Building chapter of the Safety Code (BCSC). They must be inspected every five years by an engineer and, if necessary, corrective work to make them safe.
