A horizontal concrete structure that does not contain reinforcing steel unless its design requires it. It is rather usual for it to contain a wire mesh at its base. The slab is placed on a compacted granular cushion and its surface is leveled to allow adequate drainage. On the other hand, when it contains reinforcing steel, the slab is rather called "raft" to differentiate it from a typical floor slab. It then replaces the foundation footings that are not compatible with the soils in place, in order to allow construction.
